The Ascent of Castaic High School’s Science Olympiad Team to Top-10 in the Regional Tournament
The Science Olympiad Team from Castaic High School, a fresh addition to the William S. Hart Union High School District, showcased an impressive blend of dedication and intellect by clinching ninth place at the Southern California Science Olympiad Los Angeles Regional Tournament on a recent Saturday. This victory not only set them ahead of numerous schools within their district but also distinguished them among the majority of the 29 participating schools. The competition was a rigorous examination of the students’ abilities in 23 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) events, which spanned the entirety of the day and often required the collaboration of pairs.
Remarkable Achievements and Medalists
Within this competitive arena, several students from Castaic High distinguished themselves by securing medals in five specific events. Quinn Broadwater and Giovanni Foster reached the second position in the robot tour, whereas Jeremy Woolley and Ethan Wilson followed closely with a third-place finish in the same category. Dunstan Leogo and Jeanelle Estrella achieved third in forensics, demonstrating their analytical prowess. Additionally, Joshua Song and Colton Kim attained fourth in anatomy/physiology, while the trio of Colton Kim, Amanda Lee, and Chloe Na garnered fifth in codebreakers. These achievements underscore the team’s diverse skill set and dedication to excellence across a variety of scientific disciplines.
Guidance and Preparation
The team benefitted from the leadership and expertise of science teachers Kate Song and Tamara Irmischer, who served as the coaches. Their guidance was pivotal in the noticeable improvement in both participation and performance compared to the previous year, where the team’s ranking was significantly lower. The meticulous preparation involved dividing events among the fifteen students per team, ensuring broad participation and leveraging each student’s strengths and interests. The coaches emphasized the importance of engaging in all events to foster a competitive edge and commended the senior class for their leading role in nurturing a culture of enthusiasm and dedication toward science within the team.

Among the standout members of this team was senior Colton Kim, the founder and president of the Science Olympiad Club at Castaic High. Kim’s initiative in establishing the club amidst a lack of existing structure highlights the spirit of leadership and ambition within the team. Starting from a modest group of five competing virtually, the team has witnessed substantial growth in both size and capabilities, evolving into a contingent of thirty members that have demonstrated exceptional performance in a demanding in-person competition format.
