A Day of Discovery: Seuss Science Day Ignites Imagination and Learning
In a creative fusion of literary whimsy and scientific inquiry, Ozarks Public Television (OPT) alongside the Ozarks Regional YMCA is set to host the enchanting 13th annual Seuss Science Day. Marked for March 2, this celebration is directly influenced by “The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That!,” a notable series from PBS KIDS. The primary goal of this event is to merge the imaginative worlds of Dr. Seuss with the foundational elements of reading and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, nurturing a young child’s curiosity and adventure spirit in learning.
Inspiration Behind the Event
Functioning more than just an interactive fair, Seuss Science Day is imbued with a dual-purpose mission. Proceeds garnered from the day’s activities are meticulously directed towards two noble causes: bolstering children’s educational content on OPT and reinforcing the Ozarks Regional YMCA’s financial assistance fund. These efforts underscore a commitment to accessibility in education and community support.
A Festive Gathering for Curious Minds
Pat Jones YMCA, situated at 1901 E. Republic Rd., Springfield, will become a hub of discovery and joy, welcoming the public with no entry fee. The day’s itinerary is packed with Seuss-themed STEAM activities, courtesy of the collaborative efforts between the YMCA, OPT, and more than 17 local entities spanning businesses and nonprofit organizations. Participants will also enjoy Dr. Seuss story times, engaging science experiments, and photo opportunities with The Cat in the Hat, among other interactive experiences such as exploring the Big Rig area, which is to feature the iconic Oscar Mayer Wienermobile.
Building Stronger Community Ties
Rachel Knight, OPT’s general manager, emphasizes that Seuss Science Day is an embodiment of OPT’s overarching aim of serving the community. By providing an educational yet engaging environment, the event nurtures interactive learning experiences for children. The outdoor Big Rig area, in particular, introduces children to community helpers like law enforcement and emergency responders, fostering a sense of safety and fun.
The Pillars of Partnership: Ozarks Public Television and Ozarks Regional YMCA
Ozarks Public Television: A Beacon of Educational Broadcasting
As a proud affiliate of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), OPT delivers a wealth of educational programming spanning national, regional, and local content. Notably, OPT provides 6.5 hours of educational children’s programming daily, reaching over 99,000 kids each week and offering a dedicated 24/7 PBS KIDS digital channel. Remarkably, children’s programming constitutes nearly a quarter of OPT’s annual operating budget, affirming its dedication to young learners. Licensed to Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, OPT stands as a pillar of educational excellence.
Ozarks Regional YMCA: Strengthening Community Foundations

Comprising eight family centers including specialized branches and child care facilities, the Ozarks Regional YMCA lives its creed of Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility, making it an integral part of the community fabric.

It’s a testament to how literary magic and scientific discovery can come together to inspire the next generation.
